As I sit here at 5.30 in the morning, the birds are singing and there's a freshness in the air like I were in some little provincial town somewhere in deepest rural France.

OK, I'm not in Paris, I admit, I live in the far suburbs, but there are still parts of the capital, you can imagine, which hold a real other-worldly charm and where you can feel a certain distance from the usual hustle and bustle of the busy city streets.

This is one of those places, helped, of course, by a little iPhone magic. You might not even look twice as you pass this charming staircase, so prolific are they in Montmartre where we find ourselves, but with some careful placement and angling we can eliminate (almost) everything which tells us we haven't just been kicked 100 years into the past. As an aside, today we could of course have spirited away the graffiti top right or simply cropped more, but I don't live in 1912, and I kind of like it in a way, it's my world, after all (the rubbish bin's gone tho' ;~S)...

Montmartre is truly one of the loveliest parts of Paris, and although a lot of it has been overtaken by the sprawl of urbanisation there are still plenty of places which take us straight back to the times of Monet and Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh, Utrillo and Picasso, all of whom used to haunt these slopes in a way we can only close our eyes and try to envisage today.

Then again, in 100 years' time we will be the haunters and perhaps some ultra hi-tech soul will be sending articles into cyberspace by the power of thought alone about those who, in their turn, roamed and gloamed here 100 years before, waayyy back in 2012. I wonder what we'll</i. be remembered for...

And why not...
